DIY Hair Masks for Healthy and Lustrous Hair

Up to 50% percent of women will experience hair loss in their lifetime and it is becoming a more and more common issue. As women, we place so much importance on the health of our hair. I have seen so many women with anxiety and a lack of self esteem due to hair loss.

I will cover off on nutritional supplements and herbal remedies for hair loss in a separate post but would love to share some tried and tested DIY masks to address dry hair, hair loss, dandruff and to achieve the beautiful, lustrous hair we all deserve.

Hair mask for thinning hair and hair loss

Rosemary oil is a beautiful essential oil designed to boost circulation to the scalp which promotes nutrient flow to prevent hair loss and encourage hair regrowth. Lavender essential oil is also calming and soothing to the scalp.  Vitamin E is a very effective oil when it comes to hair (and skin) repair and strengthening. Use this mask 2-3 times a week or before every hair wash for best results. Use a base of argan oil or olive oil for best results.

Ingredients: Mix 1 tablespoon of Argan Oil or Olive Oil + 1 vitamin E capsule + 5 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil and 2 drops of Lavender Oil. Massage into scalp and cover with a hot towel or shower cap to activate. Leave on for approximately 30 minutes or up to 90 minutes if you have the time. Wash hair as usual.

If you suffer from PCOS adding 2 drops of peppermint oil and geranium oil will also help! If you don’t have time to leave the mask on just use it whilst in the shower directly on scalp as this will still be of benefit!

Hair mask for dull and lack lustre hair

Pink clay and avocado are often used on the face but are equally as effective when used on the hair. This DIY mask can be used on both the hair and skin. Pink clay works to purify and strengthen, while avocado nourishes and hydrates, and apple cider controls excess oil production. The result is a purifying and treatment that addresses excess oil while also revitalizing lackluster and dull skin and hair.

Ingredients: Mix one small Avocado, 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider, 1 tablespoon of Oatmeal or Pink Clay (if available), 1 tablespoon of Coconut Syrup (or Honey) and blend well. Add 2 tablespoons of coconut yogurt for desired thickness. Apply on damp hair, starting at the scalp and working your way to the tips of hair. Leave on for 20-30 minutes and wash hair as normal.

TIP: Washing hair with beer of all things has also been shown to have hair shine benefits but I personally do not like the idea of my shower smelling like a pub!

Hair mask for dry hair

Avocado is a wonder ingredient when it comes to hair. It contains minerals which can help to seal cuticle cells and promote shiny and lustrous hair that doesn't break. Banana is rich in silica which is important for smooth and shiny locks.

Ingredients: Mix 1 Avocado, 1/2 Banana along with 1-2 tablespoons of Olive Oil. Apply mask on scalp and all over hair. Apply a shower cap and leave for 30 to 60 minutes. Wash as normal.

Hair mask for dandruff

Both Aloe Vera and Apple Cider have calming and nourishing actions on the scalp to alleviate dandruff.

Ingredients: Mix 3 tablespoons of Aloe Gel with 3 tablespoons of Apple Cider. Add 1 tablespoon of Yoghurt if desired. Blend well and massage onto damp scalp and hair. Leave on for 30 minutes and wash as normal.

Store any excess mask in a glass jar for use within the next 5 days! I hope you enjoy your home-made hair mask treats as much as I do.
