5 Unconventional Ways to Detox Your Skincare Routine

With the whirlwind of January having passed, February is the perfect time to set any intentions for the year ahead. Just as you might clean out your wardrobe or pantry every few months, it’s important to do the same for your beauty products. This could be something as simple as checking used by dates or really delving into your everyday routine to discover exactly what ingredients you’re applying to your skin. When it comes to detoxing your skincare regime, there a few unconventional tips you can follow to see seriously impressive results.

 1. Take a Digital Detox

While it may seem daunting, a digital detox can be beneficial to more than just your state of mind. Did you know that hours of daily exposure to screens can impact your skin? The high-energy visible light (HEV) or “blue light” emitted from our screens has been subjected to multiple studies in recent years. With links to both sleep and skin health issues, a 2014 study discovered that this blue-violet light can cause more hyperpigmentation than UVB radiation!

This constant access to our phones can even contribute to breakouts. Just think of how much bacteria and dirt our phones come into contact with every day. Whether it’s taking a phone call or scrolling through Instagram, these bacteria is easily transferred to the skin.

2.  Lymphatic Drainage

More than just a facial massage, lymphatic drainage is a technique that stimulates the lymph nodes by guiding fluid through the vessels. This simple everyday practice is fantastic for debloating the face, stimulating blood flow and removing excess fluids and toxins from the skin.

3. Up Your Magnesium Intake

As your skin is the largest organ in your body, it’s important to take care of it from head to toe! Responsible for over 300 biochemical reactions within the body, ensuring your magnesium levels are healthy is incredibly important. Known for its ability to soothe tired muscles and relieve pain, magnesium can also benefit your skin health. When it comes to magnesium, we recommend applying it topically as this allows for greater absorption.  If you struggle with dry skin conditions such as eczema, taking a bath in magnesium salts is perfect for soothing any irritation.

4. Consider Oil Pulling

Another unconventional way to detoxify your skin is through oil pulling. This ancient ayurvedic practice draws and expels toxins from the mouth. Best done in the mornings on an empty stomach, this process usually takes anywhere between 15-20 minutes. It may sound grueling but you’ll love the benefits! Not only does oil pulling whiten your teeth, it can also increase energy levels, balance hormones and detoxify the skin.

 5. You Are What You Absorb

When it comes to beautiful skin, it’s all about building a solid foundation from the inside out. Your gut health is just as important as the products you apply to your skin. Responsible for the absorption of nutrients, a balanced gut flora is key to a healthy complexion. During your detox, try and up your probiotic and fermented food intake each day. Your body will be left feeling less sluggish and your skin with a natural glow!

Detoxing doesn’t have to mean overhauling your everyday routine. It’s all about incorporating subtle changes that make a world of difference. From a relaxing facial massage to less screen time each day, these unconventional practices are fun and rewarding ways to get your skin ready for the year ahead.
