How To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

At Edible Beauty, we create a range of inside-out beauty products that are therapeutic, luxurious and packaged to make a positive impact on your skin, health and our environment. We believe that earth-friendly products and sustainable packaging that does not contribute to landfill and does not leach harmful toxins is the only way to go. Clean ingredients resonate throughout our botanical skincare, beauty teas and wellness supplements because we care enormously about our environmental footprint.

Reducing your carbon imprint is something that you can do in many different areas of your lifestyle, so let's take a look at some easy and effect ways we can make a difference to our precious planet. Bonus: these hacks come with benefits such as getting fitter, looking after your skin and being creative!

Our first step towards reducing carbon footprint

Have a think about what you need instead of what you want. A sharp observation, but we found this helpful for changing, some of our unnecessary, daily habits. Us humans are such creatures of habit, and it can at times be challenging to change life long habits. As you move towards living a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, remember that every small change you make does make a difference to our planet.

"Every breath of air that we take, every mouthful of food that we take comes from the natural world. If we damage the natural world, we damage ourselves."

- Sir David Attenborough, speaking to The Duke of Cambridge during the World Economic Forum.

Don’t waste!

One of Sir David Attenborough’s messages during this interview was powerfully simple: "don’t waste." Don’t waste food, water, plastic bags, clothes, coffee cups, straws, power…. Recycling your rubbish is an excellent first step. Secondly, install a water-saving shower head and turn the water off while brushing your teeth. Putting an egg timer in the shower is a fun way for your kids to become mindful and appreciative of one of our most valuable resources, water. Changing a habit together really helps. As you walk out of every room turn the lights off. Did you know that energy saving light bulbs, LED is 85% more energy efficient than most light bulbs? LED lights also last 5 to 10 times longer than a traditional light bulb.

Get creative & up-cycle!

What else could you do with the packaging and containers of products you use when their contents runs out? We love up-cycling our empty Edible Beauty skincare and tea glass containers for everything from vases to toothbrush holders. The beautifully printed cardboard packaging that we use make excellent gift boxes too for smaller items such as jewellery. Just remove the outer sleeve so you just have the floral inner, pop your present inside and add a ribbon! It's always fun to get creative and up-cycling is all about that.

Do I need to dry the clothes in the tumble dryer?

Tumble dryers gobble up an enormous amount of power. Unless you have already installed solar panels on your home, your power bill will be massive. Installing solar panels is a fabulous step towards reducing your carbon footprint and saving you money.

Do I need to drive or can I instead walk?

Try walking, cycling, or catching public transport. Not only will you be reducing transportation emissions you will be moving your body, slotting in some exercise and having a good chat with your friends. It seems like a win-win situation.

How can I reduce my digital time?

Modern society can’t survive without going digital or using power for some reason or another. Maybe there might be times when you could switch devices off when not using. Before bedtime, turn off and unplug as many power switches as possible. As arduously annoying as this may sound flick this task into a mindfully, grounding and relaxing time to observe and indulge in your beautiful space you call home.

Do I need to wear trending fashions?

Of course, it’s cool to be wearing the latest ‘in thing.’ Thankfully some fashion designers are becoming more eco-friendly, but is it essential to buy that new dress? Is it a want or a need purchase? Become aware of how your clothing purchases impact our environment. Bonus: it will be great for your bank account!

How can I become addicted to downsizing?

Car, house, bags, meals... Maybe think about downsizing the amount of red meat you eat. Greenhouse gas emissions from red meat are enormous causing severe damage to our environment, directly impacting climate change. Consider experimenting with other sources of protein such as pulses, legumes, and super greens. Avoid plastic bags, instead choose sustainable cloth, mesh or canvas bags which we are thrilled to observe, are the latest ‘in thing’!

Use quality natural, eco-conscious skincare & personal items

Consider buying from brands who are environmentally conscious. Ways in which eco-friendly skincare brands actively reduce their carbon emissions is by using recyclable packaging, avoiding harsh chemicals and plastic microbeads and sustainably sourcing highly active natural ingredients.

At Edible Beauty, we formulate our botanical, toxin-free skincare with consciously selected, powerful therapeutic ingredients. Our active ingredients are always so good and pure you could literally eat them and are backed by science to ensure our results-driven range will enrich and nourish your skin, body and mind. Our natural skincare products are packaged in sustainable, recyclable dark violet Miron glass. They contain NO preservatives, parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals, benzyl alcohol, aluminium, artificial fragrances, EDTAs, silicones, synthetic dyes and triclosan. We’d love you to join us for a cup of Beauty Tea - packaged in recyclable black rice paper bags and amber apothecary jars, brewed in a stainless steel infuser, and share with us your tips on reducing your carbon footprint in the comments below. We are all in this together!
