Botanical Science Skincare – How we blend edible purity with science-backed actives

When it comes to our Edible Beauty formulations, not only are we passionate about an “edible” purity standard, but we are also equally passionate about blending science backed actives into our formulas to ensure that they provide powerful skin transforming results.

This means that we scour the globe to find actives that meet our purity standard, but that are also clinically proven to address the skin concern they are supposed to target.

Our purity standard means that an ingredient may in fact be synthetic but of food-grade standard, which means that we can and do use synthetic actives, especially when they are fermented sugars or amino acids and vitamins that are powerful and clinically proven for their skin-transforming benefits.

Our skincare products are formulated in such a way to ensure that their delivery system is optimized and delivers nutrients into the deeper layers of the skin, beyond the surface.

Conventional skincare uses penetration enhancers such as occlusive agents (silicones), solvents and enzymes to do this. Whilst they can aid effective skincare penetration, they can be of detriment to the skin, providing an occlusive layer so that the skin cannot breathe, disrupting the skin barrier and also leading to irritation. Furthermore, whilst solvents in isolation can have effective penetration the final formulation and ingredients used may not.

When it comes to our formulations, we ensure active and botanical ingredients effectively penetrate trans-epidermally using the below methods:

  1. Plant extract encapsulation – Australian Natives and botanicals used in our skincare formulations are extracted using an innovative cellular extraction which ensures that the phyto-actives found in the plants are 100% bio-available, stable and effectively penetrate our skin dermis.
  2. Carriers – Ingredients that you will find in our skincare formulas include hyaluronic acid and Camellia Seed Oil which works like an osmotic pump, delivering actives through the skin barrier.
  3. PH balanced formulation – We formulate our products with the pH closest to the natural environment of your skin, which means they are absorbed most effectively.
  4. Concentrated actives - We formulate with the maximum allowable dose of actives to optimize their performance.
  5. Ceramides – Ceramides are lipids (fats) naturally present in your skin, they can assist in increasing skin penetration when applied topically.

To deliver optimal results from your skincare, we have done the hard work in finding the bio-actives which have impressive performance and constituents. They deliver exceptional results without compromising on purity. Below you will find information on five key actives or groups of actives used in our skincare formulations.

Australian Natives

The innovative method by which our native extracts are harvested and extracted, means that their abundance of unique antioxidants including phenols, flavonoids, gallic acid, natural vitamin C and flavone glycosides are stable, encapsulated and in their whole form which surpasses the benefit of any synthetic, unstable vitamin C.

Grown in arid regions of Australia, these extracts contain a super antioxidant profile in order to survive the harsh conditions where they grow. The Australian extracts used in our skincare include Kakadu Plum, Lemon Aspen, Snowflower Seed, Riberry, Davidson Plum, Desert Lime and more.

The innovative extraction process by which these actives are derived is extracted directly from the plants' cellular structure – the elements that contain the plant nutrients – the result of which is a stable liquid that simulates the plant's internal workings and maintains all the unique phtyo-nutrients found inside the plant. This progressive approach to complex extraction maintains the synergy of an intricate cellular matrix to provide potent extracts that retain activity outside of the plant.

Australian native botanicals can be found in all of our skincare and wellness products.

Camellia Seed Oil

Our Camellia Seed Oil is cold pressed and certified organic. Native to Japan and South East Asia, this oil is very stable which means it does not oxidise and penetrates quickly into the deeper layers of the skin.

It is rich in oleic acid (Omega 9), which makes it an effective oil for dry skin as it is able to effectively replenish the skin’s moisture barrier and also prevent additional trans-epidermal water loss which also makes it soothing for irritated skin. It also contains linoleic acid (Omega 6) which provides it with skin rejuvenating and scar healing properties.

It is an emulsifying oil which means it can help to emulsify other fats, acting like a carrier to help other oils used in our formulations to penetrate the dermis. The seed oil also contains natural phyto-actives, such a vitamin E, vitamin C and youth-boosting polyphenols, which provide protection from environmental aggressors.

Camellia Seed Oil can be found in: Basking Beauty Natural Sunscreen SPF50No. 1 Belle Frais Cleansing MilkNo.4 Vanilla Silk Hydrating LotionNo.4+ Tinted Vanilla Silk Hydrating Lotion SPF15& Desert Lime Flawless Face Micro Exfoliant& Coco Bliss Intensive Repair Crème& Snowflower Illuminating Oil

Ceramides

Think of ceramides as the mortar between the bricks which are your skin cells. They help to hold skin together by forming a protective layer that limits moisture loss and protects against visible damage from pollution and other environmental stressors.

Not all ceramides are created equal, with some easily oxidising or not facilitating delivery to the skin dermis. Our ceramide, Trisolve-P is a natural ceramide and skin barrier recovery agent obtained by encapsulation by high pressure homogenization of Trehalose, Ceramides and Phytosterols into a lipophilic vesicle. This combination of ingredients mimics the composition of the cutaneous hydrolipid mantle, repairing it in case of damage. The use of trehalose in our ceramide, enables it to be used as a wetting agent to increase the rate of hydration in the stratum corneum.

In Vivo studies on Triasolve-P have shown:

Col-FragTM (Plant Collagen)

Col-Frag remastered™ is the plant-based collagen we use in our Plant Collagen Plumping Serum. It is a building block and booster for collagen synthesis and tightens the dermis and epidermis while preventing senescence (the process of deterioration with age).

The specific collagen used is a type I collagen fragment produced in wild plants as biofactories. This sustainable technology allows molecules of collagen to be obtained which are identical to a fragment of the human collagen type I sequence, with the proper post-translational hydroxylations required to be fully functional.

Studies reveal it has a superior efficacy to Ascorbyl Glucoside in reducing wrinkles, providing a facelift and enhancing skin brightness.

Clinical studies on Col-FragTM have shown:

Col-Frag can be found in our Plant Collagen Plumping Serum

Phyto-retinol/ Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is the first plant-based natural alternative to Retinol that does not produce any of the negative side effects often associated with retinol. Bakuchiol has been clinically proven to reduce hyperpigmentation and multiple signs of ageing as efficiently as retinol, with a better skin tolerance.

We use a phyto-retinol which is a functional analog of retinol. It is phytochemically stable and has numerous studies backing its efficacy. While many ingredients in the market claim to be an alternative to Retinol, only Sytenol ® A - the Bakuchiol we use in our formulations, has the scientific data (genomic, proteomic, in-vitro and cell-based assays) and clinical studies to demonstrate its ability to match, and in certain respects outperform the performance of retinol.

Clinical studies on Bakuchiol (Sytenol® A) have found:

Bakuchiol can be found in our retinol treatment alternative, Beauty Reset Drops

Prebiotics

Prebiotics have a unique ability to balance the skin microbiome and visibly smooth and plump the skin. We use a prebiotic known as Baciullus Ferment, which is metabolized by the micro-organisms that exist on the skin’s surface (commensal cutaneous microbiota). This action enhances the release of postbiotics and antioxidants which work to protect the skin cells from environmental stress factors.

It also works to increase the ability of skin cells on the outermost layer of the skin (keratinocytes) to produce “ageless” proteins which help to enhance the integrity of the skin surface and hydrate and protect the skin.

Coined as an “agebiotic” it represents a new approach to looking after the skin’s microbiome.

Clinical studies of the ‘agebiotic’ have found:

Bacillus Ferment can be found in our & Botanical Water Gel

Squalane

Squalane is used in a number of our skincare formulations. It represents a more stable form of our body’s natural moisturizer, squalene, providing superior hydration and youth boosting benefits compared to other oils. Traditional squalene is extracted from shark liver, or olive oil which is often inconsistent. The squalene we use in our skincare formulations is extracted from sugar cane.

We love using Squalane due to its high absorption, ability to reduce transepidermal water loss, and its ability to work as a carrier helping to enhance the performance of actives in skin care products and transport them deep into the layers of the skin.

Along with its moisturising ability, squalane benefits also include being an oil-soluble antioxidant. It works with other antioxidants in skin to neutralise damaging oxygen molecules generated when skin is exposed to UV light. The antioxidant benefit of lipid peroxidation, a process that damages the skin’s barrier and deeper in the pore lining where oil originates. This peroxidation is also believed to play a role in forming blemishes.

Squalane is recognised by other lipids present in skin such as ceramides and cholesterol, where it works to visibly repair the skin’s barrier.
