How To Do Cleanser Right

We are all told to cleanse day and night (and to avoid crashing without removing our makeup!), however the quality of your cleanser can determine whether your skin is left soft and supple, plus ready to absorb all of your botanical actives or whether your skin becomes red, clogged, hypersensitive and unhappy.

From years of experimenting with different cleanser formulas and trialling them on my own redness-prone and sensitive skin, I have come up with five winning cleanser properties to ensure your cleanser not only cleans but hydrates, protects, balances and brightens your skin.

1. Fear foam!

When we use a cleanser that foams (regardless of whether this is a natural foam or not), this action strips much of the precious moisture found on the skin which means that the natural oils within the skin are removed and the body is forced to produced extra oil in order to balance this loss, resulting in – you guessed it –  more oil! This is a process of overcompensation by the body to address a loss of its natural moisture balance. By using a cleansing milk or oil containing natural plant based cleanser to remove impurities, we actually provide the skin with the natural oils and hydration that it needs to stop producing excessive sebum which clogs pores.

2. Unclogging agents are key.

Look for ingredients which naturally unclog and refine pores in your cleanser. I personally love salicylic acid. At a low dose (less than 2%) which makes this product pregnancy safe, it works to unclog pores, reduce bacterial build up, prevent acne and blackheads, and even soften fine lines. The key to using salicylic acid wisely is ensuring it is not a high percentage of your product formula as this can result in excess skin sensitivity and stripping of the skin barrier. A few natural essential anti-microbial oils to avoid as they may irritate the skin and exacerbate redness include tea tree oil, lavender oil, rosemary and eucalyptus oils.

3. Avoid fragrances.

Synthetic fragrances can be a source of skin sensitisation, skin reactions, dermatitis, and allergic-type reactions. So if your cleanser smells a little man-made then it might be worth reconsidering it.

4. Look for hydrating ingredients.

Coconut oil, the oil found in our No.1 Belle Frias Cleansing Milk, is pure and good enough to put in your mouth, which is as we like it! Both in your mouth and on your skin, it acts an abundant source of fatty acids that are uniquely formed to deeply moisturise, hydrate, and condition the skin. Rich in polyphenols and vitamins A, C and E, coconut oil is a potent anti-ageing nutrient promoting collagen production and deeply penetrating the skin to promote lasting hydration.

5. Do not compromise on purity.

Cleansers are an everyday essential that we can get through quite quickly. This makes it even more important to ensure it is of high quality, paraben free and made with therapeutic botanicals - even though it can be tempting to look for cheaper options. Common ingredients used to reduce the cost of cleanser formulas that you want to be avoiding include sodium lauryl sulfate, fragrances, alcohol and petroleum/mineral oil derived ingredients (they may be listed as Propylene Glycol, Parraffin, Mineral Oil, Butylene Glycol, Isopropyl Alcohol and Petrolatum). As with all your products search for an "edible" ingredients list! Following the golden rules above will ensure your skin is hydrated, clear and glowing, every day.
